In tennis, Venus Williams was in action at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, South Carolina, as she was facing fellow American Alison Riske. The older Williams is hoping for a solid effort at this event as she look to power her way towards her 50th career title on the WTA Tour.

The former number one in the world is seeded third at this tournament -- and would be favoured against Riske.

On serve in the opener the seven-time Grand Slam champ is able to take advantage of this short ball and whistle a backhand for a winner -- as she takes the set 6-4.

The 35-year-old was able to get a break in the second as she comes to net and fires a forehand winner, and takes a 4-2 lead.

And when Riske double-faulted on match point, Venus is off to the third round -- thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Russian qualifier beats second seed 6-1, 6-1

And Elenina Vesnina would face second seed Belinda Bencic.

And the Russian qualifier would have an easy time of the Swiss in the opening set winning 6-1.

Bencic is a top-ten player, but played like a bottom-ten player in this one, as she won only two games -- total, in falling 6-1, 6-1 to Vesnina, as the Russian progresses to the next round.

6-7, 6-4, 6-4 triumph sees German move into third round

German Laura Siegemund is taking on eighth seed Madison Keys.

Siegemund is serving for the set at 6-5, only to be broken by Keys to force the opener into a tiebreak. And the American would take the frame 7-6.

The German now on set point in the second -- and fires a cross-court winner to break her opponent and take it 6-4 and set up a decider.

And in the final set -- Siegemund is able to catch Keys flat-footed on the baseline, and wins the match with a drop shot -- winning it in three sets and advances to the third round.
