The UN agency for refugees spokesperson has said the Idomeni camp in Greece does not meet international standards and Europe must work together to set up better migrant centers elsewhere in the country.

''Idomeni is not an official camp from the humanitarian standards, it doesn't meet all the needs and all the... there are not... services are not well established, and it's not organised, just to say like that," said Liene Veide, UNHCR Public Information Officer.

"That's why we are also working together with the authorities that there are new sites made available for refugees where they would have more dignified shelter, where they would have more secure shelter than it is right now here, and plus in parallel to that they can actually have access to information.''

There are some 12,000 migrants living in the camp, some of whom are occupying part of the train line that links Greece to Macedonia, disrupting cargo routes.

Most of them live in tents and share few resources. Many migrants in Idomeni have yet to apply for asylum status in the hope that the borders will open and they will be let through.

The UNHCR says the camp is working with the Greek government to persuade the migrants to move into a more organized center.
