Kenya is marking one year since Al-Shabab militants attacked Garissa University and killed more than 140 people. As Kenya remembers the dead, horrific scenes after the guns fell silent at the university still haunt many.

On the 2nd of April 2015, Al-Shabaab made good on its pledge to wage a "gruesome war" against Kenya. Militants from the Somali Islamist group stormed Garissa University early in the morning, shooting two security guards dead. They then attacked students in their classrooms as they prepared for exams. Hours later, the gunmen were isolated by security forces in the female dormitories.

Some students managed to play dead, or escape through a fence. 148 lives were lost in the attack.

In the aftermath of the bloodshed, Kenya's interior minister admitted intelligence that the university was a target for Al-Shabaab had been ignored and the security response botched.

Mohamed Kuno, a US-born insurgent suspected of masterminding the attack, later surrendered to the Somali military. He and four others stood trial in January for 162 counts of terrorism- charges they all deny.
