Iran is marking the 37th anniversary of the establishment of the Islamic Republic after a two day referendum. The landmark two-day referendum came after the 1979 revolution which overthrew the US-backed government of the Shah.
An overwhelming 98.2 percent of voters supported the establishment of an Islamic Republic. Addressing the cabinet on Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the day as the realization of democracy and Islamic values.
