The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council has held a press conference this morning. Its spokesman, AN Fengshan, says the "1992 Consensus" remains the basis for communications between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

"The Chinese mainland has made it clear that adhering to the "1992 Consensus" is not only our principle, but also our goodwill. The attitude of the consensus and how to define cross-Strait relations are a testament to this goodwill. Only if we make clear this relations can we see its future," he said.

The spokesman made the remarks in response to a query about the dialogue channel between the Chinese mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council at a press conference in Beijing.

AN also commented on the passage of a proposed new law governing cross-strait relations. The spokesman said the Chinese mainland opposes any forms of action to undermine relations.

Hung Hsiu-chu was elected the seventh chair of the Kuomintang on Saturday, becoming the first woman to lead the party. AN Fengshan expressed both sides across the strait are now working to improve cooperation mechanisms.
