Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a three-day state visit to the Czech Republic. The visit is Xi’s first to a Central-Eastern European country since he became president in 2013 and his first to Europe this year.

Xi says that the Czech Republic has become an important partner for China in Central and Eastern Europe and is a good European Union friend. The Czech Republic is China’s second biggest trade partner in Central and Eastern Europe while China is the Czech Republic’s largest trading partner outside the EU. Bilateral trade topped U.S.$11 billion in 2015.

Cooperation in nuclear power, aviation, technology, and other sectors is on the rise. China and Prague last year signed an MOU jointly promoting China’s “Belt and Road” initiative, opening prospects for bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all fields.
