Full coverage: 2016 Rio Olympics
With not long to go until the Rio Olympics, many are still wondering about who will be in charge of China’s men’s national basketball team.
The current boss, Gong Lu’ming, is in contract talks with the Chinese basketball association and it is unknown whether he will remain in the role. The 59-year-old helped China win the Asian Championship last year and also led them through a successful qualification campaign en route to Rio.
Gong was also at the helm 20 years ago when the team finished eighth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, its best summer Games performance to date.
But reports have surfaced that Gong is still in talks with the CBA with the long serving coach citing salary issues as the main reason for halting proceedings.
He believes the money paid to the role of head coach is not enough, and neither is the prize money China received for winning the Asian Championship.
The Chinese Basketball Association is expected to make a final decision later today.
