Special Report: Unrest in Kyrgyzstan |
BISHKEK, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The spokesman of Kyrgyz interim government Edil Baisalov denied reports that the interim government had issued an arrest warrant for toppled President Kurmanbek Bakiyev on Sunday.
"The new government feels responsible for the security of Kurmanbek Bakiyev and is ready to protect him in order to avoid mob law being used and his life being endangered," Baisalov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
Only the court could issue arrest warrant for Bakiyevm, the Kyrgyz Prosecutor General's Office said.
It was earlier reported that Roza Otunbayeva, leader of the interim government, said on Sunday that the interim government was considering to arrest Bakiyev and put him on trial.
Meanwhile Bakiyev said Sunday that he will not resign but was ready to talk to the interim government. He insisted he did not recognize the legitimacy of the interim government.
Bakiyev also called for UN peacekeepers to guarantee peace in his country.
Three days after violent unrest broke out in the capital city of Kyrgyzstan, the situation began to calm down on Saturday.
Bakiyev fled to the south and opposition parties formed an interim government led by Roza Otunbayeva, former foreign minister.
