COPENHAGEN, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here Thursday that developed nations must accept their international obligations and clear and effective mechanism should be undertaken to impose economic punishments on defiant countries.
Speaking at the high-level segment of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, he said the whole developed nations with 20 percent of the total world population consume 85 percent of world energy resources and have played a large part in environmental pollution.
He said the United States having 5 percent of the world population consumes 25 percent of oil and energy, more than 18 percent of wood and 14 percent of water resources of the world. Almost 40 percent of the total motor vehicles of the world are moving in the United States.
Ahmadinejad proposed the year 2011 be designated as the year of "change in the consumption models and reduction of pollution in the world."
He also accused the United States and its allies of spending more money in the war than in the peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan and development of new technologies.
