France, Brazil agree on common policy at Copenhagen climate summit

PARIS, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- France and Brazil have agreed to take a common policy on climate issue ahead of the UN Copenhagen summit on climate change in December, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Saturday after meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

"We want the Copenhagen to be a success, we won't accept an abated accord," Sarkozy said at a joint press conference in Elysee Palace after their talks. He vowed to make efforts to win maximum supporters on the issue.

The French president said he will lobby for climate change at his meeting with Danish Premier Rasmussen next week, at the biennially Commonwealth Summit on Nov. 27 in Trinidad and Tobago, and during his visit to Africa.

Brazil announced Friday it would reduce carbon emissions by 36.1 percent to 38.9 percent by 2020, local media reported.

Sarkozy hails Brazil's active approach to the Copenhagen meeting and urged other countries to follow its example.

The Copenhagen summit aims to reach a binding deal on cutting greenhouse gas emission before the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.
