U.S. strongly condemns Baghdad bombings

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama strongly condemned on Sunday the suicide bombings in Iraqi capital Baghdad, which killed over 130 people and injured some 500 others.

"I strongly condemn these outrageous attacks on the Iraqi people, and send my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones," Obama said in a statement.

"These bombings serve no purpose other than the murder of innocent men, women and children, and they only reveal the hateful and destructive agenda of those who would deny the Iraqi people the future that they deserve," the statement said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also condemned the bloody attacks in Baghdad, saying that "These despicable terrorist attacks seek to undermine the impressive progress that Iraq has made towards stability and self-reliance."

However, the U.S. chief diplomat added that "They will not succeed," and the United States "will continue to support the people and government of Iraq in fighting terrorism."

Speaking on CBS television, Senator John McCain believed that Iraqi extremists are trying to ignite sectarian violence in the country.

He warned that the attacks could continue for some time. "But they're not sustainable. The majority of the people are opposed to them," said McCain.
