Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is home to many ethnic minority groups and has a colorful ethnic culture. Thanks to the government's unremitting efforts, the diversity of Xinjiang culture has been protected and preserved for future generations.

In 2005, the Xinjiang Muqam style of song and dance was recognized by UNESCO as an item of oral and intangible cultural heritage. Many other genres of ethnic culture in Xinjiang are also on their way to receiving national or world-level recognition.

Li Jilian, director of Xinjiang Art Research Center said, "We have submitted another two cultural legacies from the Uygur community this year. There are another two candidate items respectively from the Kazak and the Mongolian ethnic groups. "

Xinjiang, with an area of 1.6 million square-kilometer, is home to 47 ethnic groups. And each group has created its own rich tradition in singing and dancing.

On China's national-level list of cultural heritage, sixty items are from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
