Stuffed teddy bears and roses were left on the porch of the small white frame house in Gary, Louisiana, where Jackson grew up. Now it sits empty, as neighbors gathered to light candles and pen notes of condolence.

In New York, people gathered outside the Apollo Theatre, where Michael Jackson performed as a child.

About a dozen people danced outside the theatre to Jackson's music. Traffic stopped in front of the theatre while cars honked.

A Michael Jackson fan from NY said, "He's not dead he's alive and kicking, he's alive he's always in my heart, Michael I love you but God loves you more, he took you back to be an angel and he shouted down on me. I'm your number one fan from when we was little kids Michael your number one fan."

Elsewhere, fans expressed their sorrow across Latin America and in Asia, where he was especially popular.

Fans in China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines spoke of their shock and sadness.

"I was going to go to his concert in July and was all ready with a present to give him. I had been full of excitement to see him again but now I am never going to see him again," said a Michael Jackson fan.

Uri Geller, friend of Michael Jackson, said, "I think he was a happy man when fans were around him. He drank their love. He knew how to absorb their affection; the energy that they were emitting to him. He loved dancing. He loved creating. He was a genius."
